Lakeshore Afternoon, Webbs Mills, 18x18
Webbs Mills is defined as a village in either the town of Raymond or the town of Casco - and I suspect its parent town depends on what year you're researching, or maybe on the hometown of the historian whose work you're reading.
These days, Webbs Mills is more a wide place in the road than anything else. There's a general store there, and the road to Raymond, and then there is this tiny little park, with a gazebo and two benches. It was quiet here while I painted. Cars went by, and a van with kids on a school trip stopped, but that was it. I painted for hours, squinting into the sun and soaking up the autumn afternoon.
Webbs Mills, Casco, Raymond and the surrounding towns are all part of the Lakes Region of southern Maine. It is what it sounds like, and area full of lakes and marshes, creeks and rivers, waterways of all sorts, really. All this water creates some interesting travel issues, as you have to weave between bodies of water, sometimes, to reach your destination.
But it is beautiful, and there's good fishing in some of the waterways, and there's a freshness and a vibrance and a verdance to the area that is pleasant and attractive. We lived in the Lakes Region - in Bolsters Mills - on and off for 10 years. Southwestern Maine has its issues, but the beauty of the area is not one of them.
Scenes from the Road
Top, the Bait's Motel. I laughed out loud at this! Center, these are golden honeydews, and I have not done anything to the color of the photo. They really were that screaming yellow! And they smelled good, too. Below, yours truly in a pair of shades I really should have bought.
Dog of the Day
This beagle was baying his fool head off, outside a WalMart in Augusta, Maine.
He seemed pretty pleased with himself, too!
A Final Thought
"There is a part of me that will forever want to be walking under autumn leaves, carrying a briefcase containing the works of Shakespeare and Yeats and a portable chess set."
